Flip Mino High Definition Camcorder – 2nd Generation is 113.39 Grams of Fun
The Flip Mino High Definition Camcorder – 2nd Generationhas a slick look and practical functionality that makes it an overall good camera.
A sharp eye-catcher straight out of the box, this second generation Flip Mino has a polished metal finish and a sturdier feel than its earlier counterpart. It’s like the shiny silver horse that came from the black mare.
The backside of this camcorder maintains the shiny black look of the original with the same layout of the buttons. There is a button for Play, one for the bin, double volume keys, along with left and right arrows for file navigation. These keys are actually touch-sensitive this time around, allowing a fresh clean design with enhanced usability. The only problem with this is that one will have to adjust a bit to the sensitivity to avoid accidental issues such as deletions or some other problem.
The Flip Mino High Definition Camcorder – 2nd Generation is a solid little cam measuring in at 10 x 5.08 x 1.778 cm and maintains the compact design of the first generation with a better feel. It is only 1.27 centimetres longer than the original Flip Mino HD camcorder, which is barely noticeable and mere millimetres thicker.
The LCD size is a bit larger at 5.08 centimetres. Not as bright and clear as larger LCDs, but if the screen were larger, the camcorder would be as well and that somewhat defeats the whole idea of compact cameras.
The power button is found on the left side of the cam and on the right is a tidy latch to trigger the USB arm which pops out at the top just the same as its predecessor. The USB arm is still unfortunately stiff unlike models that are moving to the flexible version, but the positioning at the top makes for convenient USB to computer port interface and it is made of metal, so it is much sturdier.
It also features the same mini-HDMI port at the bottom next to the tripod screw, for esy connection to an HD TV.
The weight is exactly 113.39 grams and the video recording is in flash format with an 2x optical zoom. There is no image stabilisation, however, which is a drawback.
Overall
The pricing is quite nice at £79.90 and the video capture is good. You get a good, crisp finished video at the end of the day.
It falls short on light to dark transitions making for some haze, yet this isn’t all that noticeable to most users.
With a 2x digital zoom it is a little less versatile, but actually more user friendly for the average camera buff who wants to keep things simple.
It is nice to have the 8GB memory which allows for a full 120 minutes of filming time. They do have a 4GB version at a reduced cost, offering the same features with half the recording time with budget friendliness.
