Movie Edit Pro MX Plus Review (PC)

This software package is absolutely brimming with features, and you get a lot for your money here.

Movie Edit Pro MX PLUS is software that allows you to professionally edit your home movies. It is packed with a number of features that means this is good for the amateur or professional movie directors, and does this all with the option of HD, 3D and 5.1 surround sound.

There have been many video-editing suites hitting the software market in recent years, each of them claiming to have the best and most up-to-date features, so what makes this effort from Magix Entertainment so different? Well for starters, the first thing that is noticeable is the 99 available tracks, meaning you have complete flexibility over your editing. There are also numerous effects, colour correction and animation controls, so many in fact that even Steven Spielberg would be bewildered at the number of options. If that isn’t enough, you also have the ability to edit with MultiCam, a particularly useful feature if you have more than one camera.

The installation of Movie Edit Pro MX Plus went smoothly on our Windows 7 machine, so believing this to be too good to be true, we decided to install it on a Windows XP machine as well. Installation here was just as smooth running, perhaps a little quicker. So getting this software up and running is a simple process even for the beginner. There are very little options that need to be configured at installation, so it’s just a matter of clicking “next” a few times followed by “finish”.

Features
This software package is absolutely brimming with features, and you get a lot for your money here. If anything, there is too much and it could be easy for absolute beginners to be overwhelmed. This is a minor gripe however, as for the most part you are taken from step to step and the software leads you through making your first basic video. The controls are intuitive and the program runs smoothly. Except when rendering large files, this program never really slows down, which makes using it all the more a pleasant experience.

You can import your videos from a number of sources, including from an old video cassette (for those of us who still have VCRs). There are connectors to capture video from virtually every type of digital file, and the editing facilities are second to none. There are a number of controls to alter the importing parameters, but if you leave them alone, Movie Edit Pro does a good job of deciding for itself the best settings.

There are also a number of video and audio editing controls that allow you to change all sorts of parameters you’d expect, such as lighting, chroma sharpness, contrast, etc. Most of this is controlled by using on-screen sliders, so you really do feel in control of the whole editing process. There are numerous editing effects too for both video and audio, which can add a real professional touch to your masterpieces (or some light comic relief if left in the wrong hands).

Overall
Considering the price, Movie Edit Pro is great value for money. Of course you will need a reasonably powerful computer, but that’s a given if you are considering video editing. Even so, we found that even a moderately powerful computer handled the software well.

The amount of effects, parameters, and settings you get is astounding and there are simply too many to list in this review. Add to that the ability to edit high definition and 3D videos, this is an extremely capable package. It is complex enough to satisfy professional and semi-professional editors, and yet easy enough to use for amateurs and beginners. Magix Entertainment seems to have come up with the perfect balance. You can even use this to capture your screen and add voice narration, which is an extremely useful addition. All in all, you’ll be playing with this for hours.
